This is a word used in Karate in which two opponents practise with
each other combat techniques.
These movements can be prearranged or not prearranged.
Within S.E.M.K.A. Wado Ryu Karate there are different types of Kumite (sparring)
which are taught. Some of these are used for grading proposes and some are
used to increase the students knowledge for all types of combat.
Ippon Kumite (one step prearranged sparring)
The attacker from a forward stance takes one step forward and punches
towards the defenders head or body.
The defender steps backwards blocks and uses counter attacks. Click here
for example
Sanbon Gumite (Three step prearranged
sparring)
This is where the attacker steps and punches three times and the defender
blocks and counters on the last punch. Click here for example
Ohyo Gumite (Semi-free fighting prearranged
sparring)
These types of blocks uses different techniques which the student has
learnt and can be used in all types of fighting e.g. at a contest, street
fighting or free fighting in the Dojo. The block starts off in attention
stance then the attacker goes into left ,or right fighting stance with
a slight Kiai, then the attacker gains distance using only the toes, and
attacks when ready.
At the end of the sequence both attacker and defender drop their guard
with the attacker moving first. Click here for example
Yakusoku Kumite or Kihon Kumite (prearranged
basic sparring)
Kihon Kumite are a series of techniques which were originated by the founder
of Wado Ryu HIRONORI
OHTSUKA who taught the traditional ideas of Budo. The idea of Budo
is not to encounter force with force, but to render the attack ineffective
by an opposite force or block.
In Kihon Kumite you are using the following principles:-
TAISABAK (Body Control) using techniques
with body movement.
KAWASHI (Avoiding) avoids your
opponent's power.
NOGARE (Escaping) to avoid the
opponent's attack by escaping outside the opponent's range, but be prepared
to counter attack.
NAGASHI (Sweeping Away) using all
the blocks in NAGASHI form using the opponent's power against the attacker.
IRIMI (Entering) so that your counter
attack will reach your opponent you have to gain distance as your opponent
attacks you.
The students bow first to each other then both go into left ,or right,
fighting stance then the attacker performs prearranged punch or kick and
the defender blocks and counters. Both attacker and defender have to be
very relaxed and keep all attacks on target. All blocks must be focussed
and done with very little movement - being prepared for a counter attack
at any moment! Click here for example
Kumite Kata (prearranged sparring planned
and controlled movement)
These are a series of blocks and counters that Master Hironori Ohtsuka
developed showing the essence (as in Kihon Kumite)of Wado-Ryu against
punches, kicks. Click here for example
Tantodori (Knife defence)
