Below is a brief outline of one of the Katas used in the S.E.M.K.A. syllabus.
Naifanchi Kata
Naifanchi Kata is used to practice Naifanchi stance (inner circular
stance) moving only from side to side. The stance in Wado-Ryu is roughly
the width of the student's shoulders with the knees slightly bent and
toes turned inwards.
The student should have a feeling of being 'Rooted' to the ground in this
stance while keeping the upper body relaxed. The techniques include a
short hip twist with punches and blocks. Other techniques learned from
this Kata can be used for close in fighting. Keeping the body grounded
and relaxed helps to promote the internal energy (Chi), which can be applied
to the techniques.
